Looking for something different? Then consider Colombo, the oldest and most commercialized city in Sri Lanka. It is a dynamic fusion of old and new that offers a variety of experiences from the historical to the modern with a touch of the exotic. The city is constantly changing which does not detract from its vibrant atmosphere. It is a `Happening City` where there is much to see and do.

Those who enjoy sightseeing travel around the city on one of the three wheeled motorized rickshaws, Visit Colombo Fort, the major commercial centre where you will find the main post office, banks, tourist offices and restaurants, dating back to Portuguese and Dutch occupation in the 16th century. Look around Colombo National Museum and some of the beautiful Churches, Mosques and Temples that can be found within the city limits. As you travel through the streets of Colombo Portuguese, Dutch and Colonial English influences are clearly visible.

Visit the main shopping centers, where you can buy gems, readymade clothing, batiks and some of the finest tea produced in the country. Pettah is the crowded oriental market and is typical of the country and an experience to visit even if you’re not looking to buy. Walk along the cobbled streets lined with shops and stalls where you will find leather goods, electronics, fruit, clothing and brightly colored fabrics at unbelievable prices.

The energetic can play 18 holes of golf at the Colombo Golf Club and for those with less strenuous pursuits in mind the most popular beach can be found at Mount Lavinia eight miles from Colombo.

Rice and curry is the country’s staple diet and can be served at any time during the day. However if curry is not to your taste many of the restaurants offer international menus. Excellent restaurants can be found in all of the major hotels as well as more modestly priced establishments and bakeries that sell bread based snacks, fried food or more local fare. Take a picnic to Galle Face Green, a famous picnic spot and the largest open space in Colombo.

Most modern cities come alive at night and Colombo is no exception. Popular night clubs can be found at most five star hotels and well known private clubs offer music, food and drink. You can find different types of clubs and pubs to suit your taste of music from retro to techno or lounge to hop-hop. There is an emerging Pub Culture which allows you to make new friends and indulge in pub-crawls. Poker, blackjack, roulette and other games are available at the Casinos which can be identified by the flashing neon lights.

If this has whetted your appetite you will find many cheap flights to Colombo that land at the international airport in Katunayake. The best weather in Colombo is usually between November and April between the main rainy seasons. Accommodation ranges from small budget hotels to the luxurious, most equipped with air conditioning, room service and 24 hour security.
