To drink … or not to drink? That is the question.

At a recent visit to the dentist this writer was unceremoniously faced with the fact that she was about to lose a tooth! As she never had a dental issue before in her entire life and having prided herself in having good teeth, she was simply stunned. When questioned the dentist’s answer turned out to be a question in itself. “Do you frequently consume carbonated drinks?”

Now the answer to this being yes, the writer wanted with the naturally defensive need to prove the dentist wrong. Hence, she set out to find out more on this subject.

Now on hot days or while hanging out with friends, many of us look forward to relaxing with a chilled glass of our favorite soft drink. It is refreshing, cooling and can be energizing. However, have we ever considered what it is that we are actually consuming?

A soft drink also known as a carbonated drink is essentially carbonated water. The term carbonated means fizzy and gaseous which comes from carbon dioxide. In order to bring out a flavor and bright color sugar or other artificial sweeteners and food colorings are used. Caffeine is another common ingredient used in soft drinks and depending on the type of drink; preservatives become the next ingredient to finalize the formula. The term chemical on chemicals does come into mind at this moment.

These drinks though in high demand will contain very less if at all any nutrients or vitamins. Instead, the ingredients that are used have become the causes for many health related issues. These can vary from Dental decay to Obesity related problems to Bone degeneration. Now the fact that these drinks could treat our bones the way they been treating our teeth was quite a shocking discovery. On top of that, the potential weight gain and high sugar related problems just did not seem to make the drink worth it.

Which then made this writer wonder what caused the attraction to these drinks in the first place?
The enticing taste of these drinks is as the main cause of attraction. However, these are artificial tastes created by chemicals or high doses of sugar. When consumed frequently the level of sugar in our bodies is increased and as a counter action, our bodies create larger quantities of insulin. This in turn leads to the diminishing of our immune systems making us more vulnerable to diseases. Many articles are available on many media platforms and social media sites discuss on the health risk factors of consuming carbonated drinks. Therefore, it is not that we are unaware of this. Then why do we still reach for that soft drink?

It is also a fact brought to light that many see soft drinks as a symbol of status and even trendiness. It is hip to be cool and it is cool to be with a soft drink. Therefore, it comes down to one’s perception. Are you willing to be seen as one of a crowd sporting that soft drink or would you rather be original, smart and healthy by drinking an ice tea, a king coconut, a fruit juice or even better yet, water.
