Ginger is an herb whose knuckled rhizome (underground root) has a distinctive strong, peppery flavour and smell has been renowned for centuries throughout the world although it originated from South East Asia. It is used garden-fresh, dried and powdered, or in some cases as an extracted juice or oil.

From a culinary perspective, ginger is used in mainly cuisine with an Asian influence. Its flesh can be red, yellow or white depending on the variety. However its skin is light brown and the thickness depends on whether the root was harvested as a mature or young plant. Ginger is used for both savoury and sweet dishes. It is pickled to accompany sushi, used to add zest to stir fry, meat and fish dishes or even boiled in sugar syrup and used as a condiment for sweetmeats.  Not only are the root of the ginger plant used to spice up cuisine but the leaves of the ginger plant carry an aroma and flavour which is sure to tantalize your taste buds as well.

Ginger is also renowned for its medicinal properties as well. Its commonly use to cure different types of stomach ailments. These include nausea, diarrhea, colic and loss of appetite.  A bit of fresh ginger in a cup of tea not only calms the rumblings of an upset stomach but actually soothes the ramblings of a worried mind. It is important however to consult your doctor before consuming ginger as a relief from Morning Sickness.

Ginger is also used to provide relief from muscle and joint soreness, arthritis, menstrual pains, and back pains.  In addition, ginger is used as a treatment for chest infections including bronchitis. Finally, some people use ginger juice as a treatment for burns especially as a relief from the pain.

So if you are not an advocate of ginger, on your next visit to the grocers, remember to add ginger to your list. It is not only does it add great flavour to your food but it is a convenient natural medicine for an emergency.
