Amazingly spicy and surprisingly sweet, Cinnamon is a spice that has been delighting people since ancient times.  True cinnamon or Cinnamon Verum is an indigenous crop of Sri Lanka and even though it has now been planted all over the world, 80-90 % comes from our island.

Cinnamon- a true Sri Lankan SpiceCinnamon sticks are obtained from the bark of trees that belong to the Cinnamomum family. The bark is peeled away in strips from the tree and is left to dry. This process causes the strips to curl up to form the cinnamon sticks. Sometimes the dried bark is ground to powder and sold.  True cinnamon (or Ceylon Cinnamon) is made from the inner bark of the tree and is lighter in colour, texture and is more aromatic than other varieties.

Cinnamon is widely known for its use as a spice for seasoning various dishes both sweet and savoury. True cinnamon, more than the other varieties, is more suitable for sweet dishes. In addition, cinnamon is one of the few spices that can be ingested in its true form.

Besides its culinary uses, cinnamon is used as an insect repellent. Cinnamon leaf oil contains compounds which are effective in killing mosquito larvae and with issues of the rise of dengue in Sri Lanka, this is extremely useful.

Cinnamon is also known for its health benefits.  These healing attributes are due to compounds like cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate, and cinnamyl alcohol which exist in the oil extracted from the cinnamon bark. Onetherapeutic property is that it serves as an anticoagulant for blood loss.  It has also been proven that cinnamon’s essential oils help to prevent the growth and activity of some bacteria and fungi. In this instance, cinnamon serves not only as a medicine but also as an alternative form of food preservative.

Another fascinating benefit of cinnamon is that is has been proven to help diabetic patients respond better to their insulin and thus help normalize their blood sugar. In addition, it also helps to reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and cardiovascular diseases. These were the results published in the December 2003 issue of Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice. Furthermore, due to the high content of dietary fiber as well as presence of iron and calcium, this spice has been researched to have preventive properties for cancer especially colon cancer. Finally, according to studies carried out by Dr. P Zoladz in April 2004, cinnamon was found to have a positive effect on brain function in as it improves attention memory and visual motor skills when ingested or even the aroma inhaled.

Therefore the next time you reach for the cinnamon remember, you are not only enhancing your food with rich aroma and flavor but also enhancing your life with one of nature’s best medicines.
